How many days do I need for the Salar de Uyuni?
With 1 day you see the salt flat: departure at 10:30 and return around 19:30. For Laguna Colorada and the Sol de Mañana geysers you need at least 3 days and 2 nights. The 4 day tour has fewer kilometers per day and more time at each stop. If you are torn between 3 and 4, tell us your pace and we will tell you which one fits.
When is the best time to go?
You can go all year, and each season has its own look. In the dry season you see the hexagonal salt mosaic; from late December to early April there can be a mirror effect if there is water. No agency can guarantee it, because it depends on each year’s rain. From May to July nights can drop below -10 °C.
Which fees are paid separately?
Fees are not included and are paid in bolivianos, in cash, on the spot. Some examples from the tour pages: salt sculptures, about 20 Bs; Isla Incahuasi, 30 Bs for foreigners; Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, 150 Bs for foreigners. Amounts are indicative and may change.
Will I feel the altitude?
Uyuni is at 3,656 m. On multi-day tours you sleep near Laguna Colorada, at about 4,300 m, and the Sol de Mañana geysers are at about 4,850 m according to the tour page. Drink water, avoid alcohol on the first day and tell the guide if you get a strong headache or nausea. See your doctor before booking if you have a heart or breathing condition.
