Choosing where to sleep

There are three kinds of night in southern Bolivia, and each one suits a different tour.

Before you book

  • Ask in writing about heating, hot water and check-in time. With average lows of about -10 °C in June and July, the difference shows.
  • If your tour leaves early, confirm that breakfast is served on time and that your luggage will be stored.
  • In July and August, book several weeks ahead.
  • Carry cash in bolivianos: Uyuni ATMs often run out of bills.

Do not confuse the salt hotels of today with the old Hotel de Sal inside the salt flat: it no longer takes guests and is now a museum and a photo stop on the one-day tours.

Notes on the Palacio de Sal and Tayka del Desierto, and the tips, are drawn from our guide to where to sleep in Uyuni (opens in a new tab, on terraaltabolivia.com) (updated October 5, 2026) and from the Uyuni Luxe page.
