Itinerary

  1. Day 1

From the airport to the heart of the salt flat

We meet you at Uyuni airport, and you spend the first night at the Palacio de Sal.

We start at the Train Cemetery. Then Colchani, the village where salt is worked, with no stops at souvenir shops. We continue with the Plaza de las Banderas, the sculpture, the salt stairs, the Ojos del Salar and the salt mounds, and Isla Incahuasi if the water level allows.

Lunch is at the Palacio de Sal. An unhurried hour of perspective photos follows.

In Colchani, on the edge of the salt flat, stands Sueños y Leyendas, a theme park run by the Palacio de Sal. Today only the Feria del Desierto is open, which recreates the fairs of the mining era in Uyuni and Pulacayo.

At sunset, an aperitif on the salt flat, with a photo session and bicycles. At nightfall, play of light on the salt. Dinner and the night at the Palacio de Sal. If the sky allows, we go out to watch the stars, with the naked eye, no telescope.

  2. Day 2

From lagoon to lagoon, heading south

We leave around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. to see the sunrise over the salt flat.

After sunrise we go back to the hotel for breakfast. Then the day's route south begins: Julaca, the Salar de Chiguana and the Cañapa, Hedionda, Honda and Ramaditas lagoons.

We continue to the Árbol de Piedra, in the Siloli Desert, and finish at Laguna Colorada, at about 4,278 m, with around an hour on foot. We have lunch on the road and sleep at Tayka del Desierto.

It is the day with the most driving of the three, so the guide sets the pace and the stops.

  3. Day 3

Steam at sunrise and back to Uyuni

We leave before sunrise for the geysers.

First, the Sol de Mañana geysers, at about 4,850 m, with the sunrise. Then the Polques hot springs (bring a swimsuit and a towel), Laguna Negra, the Valle de Rocas and the Cañón de la Anaconda.

We have lunch on the road and reach Uyuni in the afternoon. The tour ends there.

The last night and the return transfer

The night of day 3 in Uyuni is not included, but we can book it for you with a surcharge.

The transfer to Uyuni airport on the last day of the trip is included, as is the arrival transfer on the first day. If you book the extra night after day 3, the last day of the trip is the following day.

What is not in the program

Laguna Verde and the Dalí Desert are left out, because they add many hours of driving.

Depending on the time and the condition of the tracks, the guide may discuss with you, during the excursion, whether an extra stop fits. It is not a promise: the route is already long and is designed so that you enjoy each place without rushing.

More people, or another length

For 3 to 5 people, or for 1, 2 or 4 days, we quote a tailor-made price.

The 4x4 takes up to 5 passengers for comfort. Depending on the number of days, the route can combine the Salar de Uyuni and the lagoons of the Sud Lípez. We check the salt hotels and Tayka del Desierto before sending you the proposal.

Before you book: payment, cancellation and the unexpected

Payment and booking

When you book, you pay 30% of the total: 15% as a booking payment (arras, non-refundable) and 15% as a deposit. Then a second deposit of 20% 30 days before departure and the remaining 50% 7 days before. If you book 15 days or less before departure, you pay 100% of the total when you book and it is non-refundable. If a payment does not arrive by its due date, the booking is canceled automatically. You can pay in foreign currency with Libélula, RedEnlace and Revolut, or by bank card, QR code or bank transfer; the payment provider may charge transaction fees.

Cancellation and date changes
  • More than 45 days before departure. 100% of the deposit (15%) is refunded, less bank transfer fees. The booking payment (arras) is not refunded.
  • From 45 to 31 days. 50% of the deposit is retained, which corresponds to the prepayment of lodging, transfers or others.
  • From 30 to 8 days. 100% of what you paid is retained.
  • From 7 days to 24 hours. Everything you paid is retained.
  • Less than 24 hours, and in case of a no-show. The full price is due.

Date change: possible depending on the availability of the company and of our providers, with a new quote. Sums already paid to providers are not refundable and must be paid again. If Terra Alta cancels or postpones the trip, you choose a new date at no additional cost or a refund of what you paid, except for expenses already paid to providers that cannot be recovered.

Prices

Prices are in US dollars. The base price is for 2 people in a private 4x4; for 3 to 5 people, the quote is prepared tailor-made.

Blockades, closed roads and weather

A flooded salt flat (roughly December to April) is not a reason to cancel: the tour goes ahead with an itinerary adapted by the guide, with the mirror effect, and Isla Incahuasi may not be accessible. No refund is due for the visits that change. If a dangerous external event (a storm, heavy snowfall or another natural event) or a social conflict or a blockade requires it, Terra Alta may modify, postpone or cancel the trip to protect travelers; what applies is what is provided for a cancellation by Terra Alta.

Tips and expenses

Tips are not included and are voluntary. Entrance fees listed in bolivianos are approximate and may change; they are paid on site, in cash.

Insurance

Terra Alta does not include travel insurance. If you wish, we recommend taking out a policy with medical assistance and repatriation at altitude.
